Getting ready to go on a trip for a month and a half is no simple task. There are endless things to think about and consider, things to prepare for, things to buy and list after list after list of things to keep track of. You have to plan things out carefully even in the weeks before you leave. For instance, it's probably not the best idea to go on a cooking and baking binge...because even though that pumpkin pie does look lovely now, it certainly won't look at all appealing upon returning to it 6 weeks later. That means that meals have to be planned so there aren't too many left overs, the fridge needs to be slowly cleaned out to avoid foreign objects coming to life with vast colonies of fluffy mold and green gunge, the laundry needs to be done...it is a hamper, not a toxic waste bin...but it could very well become one if you leave that pair of dirty socks to ripen for too long...needless to say, my mind has been reeling with trying to keep track of what needs to be done and in what order.

We still have two weeks before we head off to "The Continent" as some people call it...apparently it's meant to be a very high-end thing to do to spend Christmas on "The Continent"...or in our case on an island just next to "The Continet". But that's not the reason we are going..."High-End" is just not something Steve and I do. We generally don't see the point of buying something 'designer' and paying 4 times as much when we could have gotten the exact same thing at Target...the same goes for travel. We get lucky and get upgraded to first class now and then, but we also figure that the "cattle class" section of the airplane still goes to the same place!

However, if you do spend the flight in coach, you are more likely to get stuck next to that one passenger who won't turn their overhead light off the ENTIRE overnight flight there. That was our experience last year...the man sitting next to Steve stayed awake the WHOLE NIGHT LONG reading, shuffling, and playing chess with himself. At the end of the trip he informed us that he was planning to rent a car and drive to Edinburgh, or somewhere up north, when we landed. We wondered if that was a wise idea...having had no sleep and then spending the next 6 - 8 hours driving on the other side of the road...and the other side of the car! We were glad we were headed in the opposite direction. And, hopefully we'll get lucky on the next trip and sit beside someone who appreciates the joy of sleeping!
